How the work is made

A small bench workshop, not a factory. Boards are chosen one at a time, frames are cut and fitted by hand, and the finish stays open so a piece can be repaired rather than replaced.

Materials

European hardwoods — oak, ash and walnut — bought as boards rather than panels and stored until the moisture settles to the level of a heated room.

  • Air-dried timber, conditioned indoors before cutting
  • Hard-wax oil and beeswax finishes, no polyurethane film
  • Brass, blackened steel or stainless fittings
  • Linen, wool and vegetable-tanned leather for seats

Timber is bought in small quantities as work comes in, so figure and colour vary between batches. We show samples before a commission is confirmed.

Made to order

Nothing is held in stock. Your piece is built from raw boards after you order, which is why dimensions, wood and finish can still change before work starts.

  1. You send the room, the use and any dimensions you know.
  2. We reply with a drawing, the wood and finish, a price and a lead time.
  3. On agreement we take a deposit; the balance is due before delivery.
  4. We build, and send photographs at the frame and finishing stages.

A piece built to your own specification is made for you alone, so the 14-day right of withdrawal does not apply. Set out in full under returns and withdrawal.

Care and repair

An oiled surface is meant to be maintained, not protected from life. Marks sand out locally and re-oil — which a lacquered finish will not do.

  • Wipe with a barely damp cloth, then dry it
  • Keep hot pans and wet glasses off bare wood
  • Re-oil roughly twice a year
  • Bring anything that loosens or wears back to us

We repair our own work for as long as it exists and charge only materials and time. Separate from the two-year statutory guarantee — see terms and conditions.
